GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) FAQs
What is it?
GERD, or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, is a chronic condition in which stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, irritating it. This can lead to symptoms like heartburn and regurgitation.
Symptoms
Persistent heartburn
Chest pain
Regurgitation of food or sour liquid
Difficulty swallowing
Sensation of a lump in the throat or chest
Remedies
Avoid trigger foods
Spicy foods
Fatty foods
Chocolate
Caffeine
Alcohol
Carbonated beverages
Citrus fruits and tomatoes.
Identifying and avoiding personal triggers can significantly reduce symptoms.

Eat smaller, more frequent meals
Large meals can pressure the lower esophageal sphincter, leading to reflux. Eating smaller, more frequent meals can help prevent this.

Chewing your food
Chewing your food well can aid digestion and reduce the risk of acid reflux. Try to aim for 40-50 chews per bite of food.

Mindful Eating
Eat slowly and mindfully. Taking the time to eat slowly and mindfully can prevent overeating and reduce stress on the digestive system, potentially reducing symptoms.
